Ultramarathon for Tickled Pink

Tish Joyce, from the Asda Direct Team is pursuing a challenging goal to run the London to Brighton Trail Ultramarathon in September to raise money for Tickled Pink. The first challenge was the 27 miles Brighton Trail Marathon, which she completed on 18th March.

Tish said, “It was a beautifully sunny start on Brighton beach before the grueling hills of the south downs. I started well but after the midway point really struggled with the hills and the extra mile was mentally very challenging, giving me a slower than expected finish time of 5 and a half hours – but thankfully no injuries!

The Brighton Trail Marathon made me realise three things – the Sussex Downs are very, very hilly so I need to master hill running, I need to be a lot fitter and my crazy idea to run 56 miles over hilly trails was totally insane!

Sometimes I wonder what on earth I’ve let myself in for, but as I’m doing this for Tickled Pink and have broadcast it to the nation I don’t have a lot of choice! So please make it all worth my while and sponsor me.

I am determined to complete it and am now focused on improving not only my fitness but my running form to master hills. I’ve just spent a week in Berlin, studying to be a Chi Running instructor, so am confident that with some focused practice I can ensure I run more efficiently, injury free and hopefully a little faster.

To ensure I focus on improving my form and not only distance, I’ve decided to run the Wharfedale Off Road Half-Marathon on 2nd June, and then build up my endurance for the 40m Peak District Ultra in August, before the 56m London to Brighton Ultra at the end of September.’’

Fundraising is going very well with 46% of the £2000 goal raised! Please help to motivate her over the next five months of training by showing your support for Tickled Pink.

Our Tickled Pink campaign benefits two breast cancer charities – Breast Cancer Care and Breast Cancer Campaign. Tish aims to raise £2000 for this excellent cause. Please show support by donating here.

Tish will provide regular updates on each running challenge throughout the year!

Love Food Hate Waste

We’re working with WRAP to let you know how you can save money and reduce food waste.

Did you know…
Almost 50% of the total amount of food thrown away in the UK comes from our homes. We throw away 7.2 million tonnes of food and drink from our homes every year in the UK, and more than half of this is food and drink we could have eaten.

We throw away more food from our homes than packaging in the UK every year. Wasting this food costs the average household £480 a year, rising to £680 for a family with children, the equivalent of around £50 a month.

Environmental impact
If we all stop wasting food that could have been eaten, the benefit to the planet would be the equivalent of taking 1 in 5 cars off the road.

Why is it wasted?
There are two main reasons why we throw away good food:
  • We cook or prepare too much or we don’t use it in time.
  • The foods we waste the most are fresh vegetables and salad, drink, fresh fruit, and bakery items such as bread and cakes.

The good news!
Between 2006/07 and 2010 food waste has reduced by around 13%, over 1 million tonnes – this amount of food would fill Wembley stadium!

Saving money does not mean cutting down on the indulgence and fun, if anything, planning well, will leave us with a warm glow of self-congratulation. So what’s the secret?

Read our five easy ways to get started from Love Food Hate Waste and tell us your top tips.

See their website for recipes and top tips.
